Varicose veins, which result from circulation problems, commonly cause bulging veins in the legs, explains Mayo Clinic. Varicose veins are more common in older adults with weakening valves in the veins and in pregnant women experiencing greater pressure on the leg's veins.
Varicose veins affect women more than men due to hormonal changes that relax the vein walls, according to Mayo Clinic. A family history, obesity, and standing or sitting for extended periods of time increase risks of this condition. Varicose veins produce enlarged or gnarled veins that typically do not produce pain but often cause cosmetic concerns for patients.
