Asthma is the most common cause of chronic coughing in cats, according to WebMD. Other causes include infections, cancer, cardiovascular problems, parasites and even a tight collar.
Asthma, often triggered by dust particles or allergens, is more commonly seen in outdoor cats, according to WebMD. Smoke, perfume or cat litter dust can trigger asthma in indoor cats. WebMD points out that any heart or lung problem, such as heart disease, pneumonia, heartworm infection or lung cancer, can cause fluid accumulation in the lungs and chronic coughing. Lung infections can be caused by bacteria, fungi or parasites. A physical examination and laboratory testing can pinpoint the cause of the cough.
