To clear a clogged downspout, remove the source of the clog from the gutter with a spade, and rinse out the downspout with a hose. You also need trash bags, an extension ladder, gloves, a bucket and a sprayer attachment to complete this project.
- Pick your access location
Choose a location that is at the corner of the house to gain access to the downspout. Set the ladder in place, and attach a trash bag or bucket to the ladder. Work from the downspout to avoid pushing excess matter into the spout.
- Clean the gutters
Start at the gutter that is near the downspout, and scoop out the debris with the trowel. Place any waste in the bucket or trash bag. Remove any entrenched debris by hand.
- Rinse out the gutter
Place the spray attachment on the hose, and spray into the downspout to remove any clogs. Start from the bottom or upper end to clean the spout. Use a plumber's snake if the hose does not clear the debris. Dispose of the waste matter in a compost pile or trash can.
- Check for damage
Look for any cracks or dents in the downspout and gutters. Make any necessary repairs.
- Add new guards
Purchase new guards to keep excess matter from clogging the gutters in the future.
