Drinking even a little coffee can affect the outcome of a cholesterol test. Coffee and caffeinated drinks should be avoid before this test is performed.
Doctors advise that patients fast for an average of 9 to 12 hours before a cholesterol test. Foods can also affect a cholesterol test and should be avoided during the fasting period. The only thing that can be consumed during the fasting period is water.
Cholesterol levels are checked with a simple blood test. This test checks the fat levels within the blood. In most cases, the cholesterol test focuses on the LDL cholesterol and not the HDL levels.
