While the laws regarding convicted felons owning a crossbow vary by state, the statutes generally allow these individuals to use the weapon provided the state allows hunting with it. The felon must purchase the appropriate license and tags and follow other hunting regulations.
Wisconsin outlaws use of a crossbow by any hunter other than those who meet certain disability criteria. Texas law restricts use of a crossbow in a few counties during deer season. Washington allows a convicted felon to take part in lotteries for special hunts, but if drawn, the law limits his right to hunt with equipment other than a longbow, compound bow or crossbow.
