The most-effective way to get a copy of your criminal record is to request an Identity History Summary from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It is also possible to obtain a copy of your criminal record by visiting a local law enforcement office.

Local sheriff's offices and police departments allow you to get a copy of your criminal record but, often, only for crimes committed within that state. The FBI's Identity History Summary, typically called a criminal history record, contains information collected by the FBI in connection to arrests, military service, federal employment and immigration. Only the subject of the criminal history record can request a copy.
