Diet changes do often help dogs with canine liver disease, claims WebMD. Dogs with liver disease may require a special diet to ensure they receive enough nutrients and calories required to support a healthy, functional liver.
Some foods, such as fatty foods, may hurt a dog's liver, explains WebMD. Work very closely with a veterinarian to determine which foods the dog should avoid. Veterinarians can also prescribe the appropriate diet, supplements and medication to manage the dog’s liver disease, and help prevent liver failure. In some cases surgery may be necessary if there are tumors or cysts on the liver.
