Can dogs get colds?

Dogs can get colds, as well as a number of upper-respiratory infections with symptoms that resemble colds. Dogs are also susceptible to H3N8, a strain of the flu virus that affects dogs. Milder strains of dog flu can resemble colds in canines.
Runny noses, sneezing and other symptoms that affect the nasal passage are often the first signs of a cold in dogs. Dogs are generally able to recover from colds without medication as long as they stay rested and hydrated. However, if cold-like symptoms persist for more than a week, they may be a symptom of a bacterial or fungal infection, a more serious problem that requires the attention of a vet.
