Can domestic turkeys fly?

Domestic turkeys cannot fly because they weigh twice as much as their wild counterparts and are unable to flap their wings fast enough to support them in flight. Wild turkeys, on the other hand, are well-adapted for short bursts of flight, which is normally helpful when escaping from predators or flying to their nests that are built on trees.

Turkeys have powerful legs which help them stay active throughout the day and also help give the thrust needed to take off during flight, in the case of wild ones. Turkeys generally feed off of greens, bugs, corn and worms.
