Depending upon the particular plan, pre-authorization for a number of services may be necessary. For example, some plans allow consumers to choose their providers for behavioral and mental health services within the Aetna network. Other plans require a primary provider to provide a referral for such services. If stipulated by the plan, an Aetna health care provider must request pre-authorization from Aetna. To initiate this process, the provider needs to complete the forms available on the Aetna website.
