Windows Live Messenger is available for downloading on Softonic and FileHippo. As of November 2015, the later versions of Windows Live Messenger, including Windows Live Messenger 2009 and 2011, are available on Softonic, while all versions of Windows Live Messenger are available on FileHippo.

Windows Live Messenger started as MSN Messenger in 1999, until Microsoft re-branded the instant messaging service as Windows Live Messenger in 2005. This messaging service was available for Windows, Mac and XBox. However, after acquiring Skype Technologies, Microsoft discontinued the Windows Live Messenger service in 2013 except for China,to which it continued to provide service until October 31, 2014.
