Can you dry your own wood for wood working projects at home?

You can dry your own wood at home using a kiln or an air-drying method. A kiln offers shorter drying times, but air-drying is less expensive.
Kiln drying wood requires a large drying chamber, which you can build with materials from a home-supply store. The kiln also requires a heater, a dehumidifier, fans and a timer.
Air-drying wood is a cheaper process. Stack the wood under a roof in a spot with exposure to prevailing winds. Space the planks out to allow air circulation. Air-drying takes longer than kiln drying, but times vary based on the climate and wind conditions.
