Dust mites can cause severe itching and skin problems in animals, especially with those who are allergic and spend most of their time indoors. Some animals are sensitive enough to develop rashes or lesions and can lose of fur from excessive scratching and licking of inflicted areas.
Dust mites make their home in carpet fibers, beds, pillows and furniture and feed off skin flakes shed by people and animals. Pet owners can reduce their pets' exposure to dust mites by using bedding that repels dust mites, washing bedding in hot water frequently and vacuuming regularly. A veterinarian can prescribe anti-inflammatory medication, shampoo and antihistamines for pets with severe allergies.
