Can you eat cereal on a low-carbohydrate diet?

People on low-carbohydrate diets can eat cold cereal; however, in choosing brands they should look at the number of carbohydrates per serving listed on the boxes rather than guessing based on brand recognition or ingredients. People on a low-carbohydrate diet can also eat hot cereal, such as oatmeal, in moderation.

Cereals are grains, and grains are made up of carbohydrates, so any cereal choice represents a large portion of the daily allowance for someone on a low-carbohydrate diet. Some brands that are lower in carbohydrates than others are Special K, Wheaties and Cheerios as of 2015. Raisin Bran and Frosted Mini-Wheats are two of the brands that are higher in carbohydrates.
