Cellulose is classified as a carbohydrate due to its sugar molecular structure. The compound has a polysaccharide structure that is linear in nature. Its polysaccharide chain is comprised mostly of glucose monosaccharide units.
Cellulose is a carbohydrate that is found in the walls of plant cells. It is a rigid material that keeps plant cells strong in the outdoor elements. Humans are unable to digest cellulose. Many other animals, such as cows, goats and sheep, have bacteria living in their digestive systems that help them digest the compound. In humans, cellulose is known as fiber and can help keep the digestive system regular and healthy.
