The FDA advises women to limit their weekly consumption of tuna to 12 ounces of light tuna or 6 ounces of white tuna. Consumer Reports advises pregnant women to avoid eating canned tuna altogether because of the varying levels of mercury in a serving.

Consumer Reports did an analysis of the FDA's data and found that it is easily possible to exceed the mercury limits considered safe by eating as little as one serving of canned white tuna or two servings of light tuna a week. While the FDA stands by its recommendation, it admits that pregnant women need to be more cautious than other people with regard to the consumption of tuna.
