Can a female parakeet lay eggs without a male?

A female parakeet can lay eggs without the presence of a male. These eggs are not fertilized and will not result in a chick.
If a female lays one or more eggs without the presence of a male, it can quickly turn into a stressful event for the bird. It may result in malnutrition or life-threatening illnesses and should be discouraged if possible. Owners can discourage egg laying in their parakeets by putting the bird to bed at around 6 p.m., removing nesting boxes and discouraging breeding behaviors. Rearranging the cage and keeping the parakeet away from dark, quiet places can also help discourage egg laying.
