Some taxpayers can use the Free File program available through the IRS website to file their taxes online, the IRS notes. The Free File program uses third-party software, and taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $60,000 or less, as of 2015, can use the Free File Program.
Taxpayers who qualify for the Free File Program can access one of the many third-party software providers directly through the IRS website, the IRS notes. The preparing and filing of taxes are done through the third-party software and not through the IRS. Taxpayers can file their taxes and extensions for free. Some software providers also provide taxpayers the opportunity to file state income taxes for free.
