Can you freeze fresh apples?

Fresh apples can be frozen, but freezing will change the apple's texture. Frozen apples are not well suited for being eaten raw but can be used in baked dishes.

To freeze whole apples, wash them thoroughly and place them on a tray. Once they are frozen, transfer the tray to a freezer bag. Apples can also be cored and sliced and then frozen. To avoid browning, either dip the apples in lemon juice or an ascorbic acid solution prior to freezing.

If the apples are to be used for pies, the slices can be seasoned and frozen in pie plates before being transferred to freezer bags. Then the frozen mixture can be placed directly into the pie shell prior to baking.
