Growing true bamboo indoors can be tricky, but there are a few species of the plant that tolerate indoor living, according to Bamboo Gardens. Lucky bamboo is a relative of the true bamboo plant that is ideal for indoor growth, and is often sold as bamboo to unknowing customers.
Lucky bamboo is recognizable by how it's planted, which is typically in water with pebbles for support, according to SFGate. Lucky bamboo requires very little maintenance, only needing to have its water replaced once a week. Make sure to use distilled or collected water, as chlorinated tap water can be unhealthy for the plant.
