Can hamsters eat cheese?

It is acceptable to feed a hamster mild cheese in moderation. When feeding a hamster new food, it is important to introduce the food slowly. Feeding too much of a foreign food to a hamster too early can upset its stomach and possibly cause diarrhea.

Hamsters are small rodents that belong to the subfamily Cricetinae. Wild hamsters live underground in burrows during the day and emerge at twilight to eat seeds, fruits and vegetation. Insects are occasional food choices as well. The enlarged cheeks of the hamster function as pockets and are used to carry food back to the burrow, where it can be safely eaten.
