Can hyacinth bulbs be planted indoors?

Hyacinth bulbs can be planted and grown indoors through a process known as forcing. The bulbs must be chilled for months to produce a flower, a time-consuming process that often results in bulbs being discarded after the first bloom.
Hyacinth bulbs for indoor blooming can be purchased pre-chilled and planted in damp potting media in a cool place, with temperatures in the range of 45 F to 65 F. The bulbs should be planted with the tips just showing and do not need to be fertilized. After the initial flowering, bulbs can be replanted and bloom in future years, though subsequent blooms tend to lack the beauty of the first and are not suitable for propagating.
