Where is the optimum place to plant lily bulbs?

The best place to plant lily bulbs is a location with good drainage that is sunny at least half of the day. Lilies can also tolerate full sun as long as the bulbs are buried deep enough to keep them cool.
Lily bulbs should be buried 4 to 6 inches deep, though a bit deeper is acceptable in hot climates. A radius of 6 inches between plantings allows each lily enough space to spread. The flowers should never be placed in a location where water pools because they can contract botrytis, a fungus that spots the leaves and inhibits growth. Lilies may be planted any time the soil is not frozen, though bulbs planted in fall and early winter produce flowers sooner than those planted in the spring.
