To keep cut roses fresh, remove leaves from the stems and cut the bottom of the stems off at an angle. Put the flowers in a clean vase filled with water mixed with a floral preservative product.
To make cut roses last longer, use the following steps.
- Remove the foliage
- Trim the stems
- Clean the vase
- Fill the vase
- Add the roses
- Keep the flowers cool
- Change the water
Strip any leaves that sit below the water line in the vase.
Trim around 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch from the bottoms of the stems. Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle, as straight stems can rest against the bottom of the vase and block water intake.
Before adding flowers and water, give the vase a good rinse.
Pour lukewarm water into the vase. Mix in a packet of floral preservative or make a homemade version out of 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon bleach of and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice.
Add the roses to the vase.
Direct heat can cause roses to wilt, so keeping them cool helps lengthen their lifespan. Keep the vase away from direct sunlight, electric lights or appliances.
Top up the water level of the vase daily. After 4 days, pour out the water and refill the vase.
