Kmart is a chain of retail stores; its circulation of weekly print ads makes it the largest print promotional retailer. Sebastian Spering Kresge started Kmart as a five-and-dime store in Detroit, Michigan in 1899 and expanded to 85 stores by 1912 selling everything in the stores for 5 or 10 cents. In 1962, it opened its first discount department store in Garden City, Michigan along with 17 other stores. In 2002, Kmart filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and Sears bought the chain.
