The United States Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division publishes details of the Family and Medical Leave Act, or FMLA, on its official website. The FMLA protects the jobs of eligible employees when they take unpaid leave for medical purposes.
Under the FMLA, workers may be eligible to 12 work weeks of unpaid leave annually for childbirth or to care for a newborn, placement of a child for foster care or adoption and caring for a spouse, child or parent who is seriously ill.
