To look up a company's Federal Tax ID Number for free, a person can use an online service, call the IRS or contact that particular company's human resources department. Other means of locating the tax number are checking tax forms or looking at business bank statements.

Looking up the tax number, also known as an employer identification number (EIN), can be done by calling the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933, Monday through Friday from 7 A.M. to 10 P.M. Another means of locating the EIN is by signing up for a free trial of an online service, such as EINFinder.com.

If a person works for the company that they are trying to locate the EIN for, then the company's human resource department should be able to provide the EIN and if there is no HR department available, then the EIN should be provided by the person in charge of accounting or an immediate supervisor.

On a W-2 or 1099 tax form that are sent out by employers a 9-digit EIN should be clearly labeled or can be typically found in box "b" on a W-2. A person who has legal access to a company's bank statements will be able to find the tax number somewhere on the bank statement itself because companies are required to provide an EIN to open business accounts.
