Making goat milk soap involves combining the goat milk with oils, shortening and lye. The soap-making process requires goat milk, vegetable shortening, coconut and olive oils, a hand blender, a candy thermometer, a bowl, soap molds, spoons and a pitcher. A mask and rubber gloves also are recommended for safety.
- Mix the milk and lye
Put on the mask and gloves before working with the lye. Add 12 ounces of partially frozen goat milk to the bowl, and slowly pour in the lye. Stir with a spoon until well-blended.
- Prepare the fats
Add 5 ounces of coconut oil, 4 1/4 ounces of olive oil and 12 ounces of vegetable shortening to a saucepan. Heat until the mixture is 115 degrees Fahrenheit as measured by the candy thermometer.
- Combine the mixtures
Pour the oil mixture into the milk mixture. Mix with the hand blender for two to five minutes. The liquids are well-blended when drips from the blades stay on top of the mixture briefly before sinking, a condition known as tracing. Use a spatula to fold the liquid over several times to eliminate bubbles.
- Pour the soap
Add the mixture into a pitcher for easier pouring. Pour the soap into molds, and let it dry for 24 hours. Remove the soap from the molds, and let cure for two weeks.
