Making homemade greeting cards requires paper or card stock at minimum. Beyond that, how to make greeting cards depends on what type of card is being made, the material used and the creator's imagination.

Greeting cards can be made with card stock or other heavy paper and a bone folder, used to cleanly crease and fold the paper into the shape of a card. Homemade cards can be as simple as writing a personalized note with a nice pen or as elaborate as quilling, cutting intricate shapes, patterns or designs out of paper and adhering them to the card.

Depending on the card being made, scissors, a craft knife, pencils and pens, a hole punch or stamps and an ink pad may be needed, as well as glue and craft items like dried flowers, ribbon, glitter, adhesive foam or felt. Cards can be embossed by using embossing powder sprinkled onto a stamped image, heated with a heat gun.

Free printable templates can be found online and used to make homemade greeting cards. Photographs can be printed onto stick-and-peel photo paper and adhered to the card or printed directly onto photographic card stock and then folded into a homemade greeting card.
