Inaccuracies in a credit report require that the individual notify Equifax in one of three ways: online, via phone or by mail. By law, Equifax is required to investigate the dispute within 45 days of the dispute being filed, and it must inform the individual filing the dispute of the outcome of its investigation. Disputes filed by mail or phone are updated by mail, while disputes filed online are updated via email communication from Equifax.
Filing an online dispute is among the fastest ways to dispute erroneous information with Equifax. To file a dispute online, follow these steps below.
- Visit the credit report online
- Confirm the disputed information
- Submit the dispute
To file an online dispute, proceed to the Equifax website and view the erroneous information on the credit file. The disputing party provides information as to why the information is inaccurate.
View the summary of disputed information. At this point, the disputing party has the opportunity to modify or change the dispute.
After the dispute has been reviewed, clicking on the Submit button submits the dispute to Equifax for consideration. Once the dispute is investigated, the status is updated online. If the dispute is decided in favor of the disputing party, the information is removed from the credit report.
