Coronary heart disease is caused by excessive plaque lining the walls of the arteries, narrowing the pathway. LDL Cholesterol and triglycerides are major contributors to plaque buildup. According to the American Heart Association, HDL cholesterol contributes to the removal of LDL cholesterol by carrying it to the kidneys where they are processed and expelled from the body. Higher levels of HDL cholesterol decrease a person's risk for heart disease and stroke.
