Can I paint straight onto plasterboard?

Plasterboard should be cleaned and primed before it is painted. While priming plasterboard is not a requirement, it helps paint properly cover and adhere to drywall.

Before any paint or primer is applied to plasterboard, it needs to be properly cleaned. Vacuum new plasterboard with a vacuum cleaner and brush attachment. After vacuuming, wipe the plasterboard down with a micro fiber cloth. Dip a clean sponge in a solution of mild dish soap and cool water. Thoroughly wring out the sponge and wipe down the plasterboard. Rinse the plasterboard by wiping it down with a damp sponge and cool water. Allow the plasterboard to dry thoroughly before applying primer.
