Yes, it is possible to apply tile to plasterboard. Depending upon where the tiling is to be done, it is sometimes recommended to use a backer board made specifically for tiling.
If the tiling is being done in a bathroom, take special care to waterproof the plasterboard to avoid mold growth beneath the tiles. There are commercial products to paint directly onto drywall to prevent moisture from seeping through.
Never place tile directly upon wood because humidity causes wood to expand and contract. This eventually causes the tiles themselves to shift and results in cracked grout and sometimes broken tiles.
