A perforated bowel can occur multiple times, even if the condition is treated properly, according to Drugs.com. A perforated bowel is a hole or tear in the bowel that causes leakage into the abdomen and can be life-threatening, with or without treatment.
A perforated bowel can be caused by an injury, blockage or a medical condition, such as diverticulitis, explains Drugs.com. Treatment includes bowel rest, wherein the patient receives nutrition through an IV and doesn't eat or drink. Surgery may be used to repair the perforation and remove any diseased area of the bowel. The procedure can be performed with a scope or through open abdominal surgery.
