Photographs of scabies mites can be found in a slideshow on WebMD. Scabies is caused by tiny mites called Sarcoptes scabiei burrowing into the outer layer of skin.

These mites are very small, less than half-millimeter long, and can only be properly viewed through a microscope. When seen with the naked eye, Sarcoptes scabiei may only look like small black specs on the skin. Scabies mites are often not noticed by spotting the mite itself, but rather by noticing the symptoms of the infestation on the body. The presence of these mites results in an intensely itchy, pimple-like rash and visible burrows under the skin.
