A pituitary tumor can cause growth problems if the tumor is an adenoma that secretes growth hormone, according to the American Cancer Society. A child with one of these tumors is unusually tall and grows very quickly. He may also suffer from joint pain and hyperhydrosis.

However, if an adult contracts a pituitary tumor that secretes hormones, she does not grow any taller but suffers from a condition called acromegaly. Her voice deepens, and her skull, hands and feet grow. Her facial features change because of the growth of facial bones.
