The liver does not develop polyps, but it can develop both cysts and tumors, according to Cleveland Clinic. Liver cysts occur in approximately 5 percent of the population. Cystic tumors may be benign or develop into cancerous growths, which are referred to as cystadenocarcinoma.
Cystic tumors, whether malignant or benign, are removed through an open surgical procedure. This is because the threat of malignancy is high, according to Cleveland Clinic. The surgery rate for liver cysts is much lower. Of the 5 percent of people who develop cysts on the liver, only 5 percent develop symptoms that require surgery. Laparascopic surgery is sometimes necessary to relieve symptoms such as pain and bleeding.
