A subpoena is a legal request from the court, reports FindLaw. There are two types of subpoena. The first is a subpoena ad testificandum, with which a court compels a person to appear and testify for a civil or criminal hearing. The other type is a subpoena duces tecum, which the court uses to order a person to produce any tangible evidence for the case at hand. Both types of subpoena are available at the U.S. Courts website.
