Licensing a dog can be done online through most townships or counties. In general, each state oversees the regulations for a dog to be licensed in its cities and townships.

A dog is considered the owner's property, hence making the owner responsible for any misconduct or property damage done by the dog. Although licensing ensures the owner is responsible for the dog, it also protects the dog if it is lost. If the dog is lost, the license allows law enforcement, animal shelters or any lost pet holding facilities to give the dog proper attention or medical care while waiting for its owner to be contacted.
