A standard 120-volt outlet can run both fluorescent and high-pressure sodium lights as long as the total wattage is less than 1,500 watts. A standard 240-volt outlet can run both fluorescent and high-pressure sodium lights as long as the total wattage is less than 5,760 watts.
Most fluorescent lights and high-pressure sodium lights can be plugged into any standard 120-volt household wall outlet. Some systems are wired to plug into 240-volt outlets. Standard 240-volt outlets are the type commonly used to plug in washing machines. The advantage of using a 240-volt outlet is that a large, powerful lighting system can be run off a single timer.
