Can you be refused Medicare treatment?

Medicare may sometimes refuse treatment if the service rendered is not covered by Medicare. If patients find that their claims have been denied, they can appeal the refusal.

Many decisions made by Medicare are highly subjective and involve making a determination. Medicare needs to determine what treatments are medically and reasonably necessary. If Medicare rejects a disputed claim, a patient may not have to pay for the care he received if he did not know or expect that Medicare would deny the service. When this happens, the patient is granted a waiver of liability, which could mean a loss for the health care provider. However, the patient may be able to receive a waiver if he believed the service was covered by Medicare.
