Can I remove a bankruptcy from my credit?

While an individual cannot generally remove a bankruptcy from their credit report, the record is deleted automatically after a specified number of years. The amount of time before a bankruptcy drops off a credit report depends on the type of bankruptcy.

Chapter 13 bankruptcy is deleted from a credit report after seven years from the filing date, as it requires a portion of the debt to be repaid. Alternatively, Chapter 7 bankruptcies take 10 years to be automatically removed from a credit report due to the fact that there is no required repayment of debt. All other delinquent accounts are deleted seven years after original delinquency.
