Repairing a tear in upholstered fabric is achieved by gluing a piece of heavyweight fabric to the tear so that the original fabric can adhere to it. Acceptable materials for patching include muslin, canvas and denim.

To repair a tear, specific steps must be followed:

  1. Cut the repair material so it is slightly larger than the tear.
  2. Peel back any torn material and insert the new fabric.
  3. Pin the original fabric in place with an upholstery pin.
  4. Paint the patch fabric and the torn area with a thin coat of latex fabric glue.
  5. Step 5: Position the torn fabric and pin it onto the repair material until the glue dries.
