A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet is often found in kitchens, bathrooms and other areas of the home where water is used. It is designed to shut off the electric circuit when it detects a small fault or short. You can easily reset a tripped GFCI outlet with a few simple actions.

  1. Determine if the reset button is popped out on the GFCI outlet

If the reset button is popped out, the GFCI outlet is tripped. If the reset button is not popped out, press the test button below it. This causes the reset button to pop out.

  2. Press the reset button on the GFCI outlet

Pressing this button resets the GFCI outlet.

  3. Test the outlet

Plug an electronic device into the outlet to test that it is functioning properly after the reset.
