According to WebMD, treating sinus headaches generally involves treating the pain associated with the headache and its underlying cause. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen or naproxen can help reduce headache pain. Decongestants that reduce mucus and swelling in nasal passages by opening blocked sinus cavities may also provide relief.

Sinus headaches are associated with deep pain and pressure that develop between the eyes and above the nose when the sinuses get clogged. The headaches can be mild or severe, and they are sometimes difficult to treat, notes WebMD. Sinus headaches are usually accompanied by nasal stuffiness, fatigue, sore throat and nasal discharge. The pain often worsens with movements such as bending over or lying down.

If the sinus headache is related to allergies, antihistamines can be used to provide relief. A doctor might also prescribe a nasal steroid that can relieve headache pain and reduce nasal congestion. Other at-home solutions for sinus headaches include using a humidifier, trying a saline solution, using a vaporizer or placing a warm, wet towel over the face to keep nasal passages moist. WebMD also suggests avoiding irritants that can worsen sinus symptoms and irritate nasal passages, such as cigarette smoke and perfume.
