How can you shrink a cashmere sweater?

Washing a cashmere sweater in warm to hot water, or washing and rinsing a garment in different temperatures, can lead to shrinkage. Applying heat, for example, by putting it in the dryer or in direct sunlight, also will cause cashmere to shrink.

Cashmere sweaters may be dry-cleaned or hand-washed using a gentle soap. Do not bleach. Do not wring dry or put on a hanger; this will distort the garment. Lay the sweater flat to dry. Sunlight may cause shrinkage, but it also can lead to discoloration. To store cashmere, make sure the sweater is completely dry before wrapping it in paper or plastic.
