How can you tell if you have fleas?

One way to determine whether a pet has a flea problem is to look for fleas in the animal's fur. Other forms of evidence of fleas include droppings and red, itchy bumps on an animal's skin, particularly on the lower legs.
To check a pet's fur for evidence of a flea infestation, gently part the fur to one side and look for fleas and their droppings, which are usually black. Also, check socks and pants after walking through carpeted areas. A pet that scratches or bites at their fur excessively may be doing so because of a flea infestation. Owners can suspect a flea problem if they find small bumps that are red and itchy on their own feet or legs.
