Coins can be exchanged for cash at a bank or at a change sorting machine, such as Coinstar. The option a person chooses depends on how much change he has accumulated and whether he is willing to sacrifice a portion of it to have someone else count it.

Exchanging change at a bank is a no-cost option, and most banks exchange coins for cash. Some banks may require large numbers of coins to be counted and placed in coin rollers prior to acceptance. Using a coin sorting machine requires no real work, but most machines charge between 9 and 10 percent of the total amount as a fee before letting a person claim his cash.
