Prevent urinary tract infections, or UTIs, by drinking plenty of fluids, wiping from front to back and emptying the bladder after having sex. Women should also avoid feminine products that might cause irritation, such as powders and douches, since these products can lead to a UTI, according to Mayo Clinic.
Drinking water and staying hydrated helps to dilute the urine and flush out bacteria from the urinary tract, notes Mayo Clinic. Wiping in a front-to-back motion lessens the chance of bacteria from a bowel movement entering the urethra or vagina. Emptying the bladder following sexual intercourse helps to flush out bacteria that might otherwise cause a UTI.
