According to WebMD, as long as a man's high blood pressure is under control, it's safe for him to take Viagra. If he takes alpha-blockers for hypertension, Viagra is not recommended.
The Mayo Clinic explains that high blood pressure often causes erectile dysfunction, creating a need for drugs like Viagra. Hypertension causes blood vessel damage and hardening of the arteries, which is also known as atherosclerosis. Blood flow is reduced throughout the body, including to the penis. This interferes with erections. In addition, ED is a possible side effect of certain blood pressure medications, such as diuretics -- water pills -- and beta blockers. Diuretics lower blood flow to the penis, and beta blockers affect the nervous system.
